Road Trip: Engelberg to Lauterbrunnen and Beyond (July 30)
Our road trip from Engelberg to Lauterbrunnen was a scenic journey through the heart of Switzerland. The drive offered stunning views of rolling hills, charming villages, and distant mountain peaks.
Upon arrival in Lauterbrunnen, known for its dramatic cliffs and 72 waterfalls, we immediately felt immersed in a postcard-perfect landscape. From Lauterbrunnen, we took the cogwheel train up to Mürren, a car-free village perched high above the valley. The train ride itself was an experience, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.
In Mürren, we spent the afternoon exploring the quaint village, enjoying leisurely walks and soaking in the serene alpine atmosphere. The absence of cars added to its tranquil charm. To descend, we opted for the cable car from Mürren to Stechelberg, a thrilling ride down the sheer cliff face, providing incredible views of the valley below. From Stechelberg, a convenient bus took us back to Lauterbrunnen.
Our next leg involved a train journey from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald, with a seamless connection at Zweilütschinen. From Lauterbrunnen, we took a train to Zweilütschinen, where the train carriages split—half continuing to Interlaken and the other half heading towards Grindelwald. Grindelwald, a bustling resort town, offered a different, more vibrant alpine experience with its numerous shops and restaurants. We did not have enough time to explore Grindelwald further and therefore returned to Lauterbrunnen the same way (i.e. via Zweilütschinen). Finally, we embarked on the return road trip from Lauterbrunnen back to Engelberg, a familiar yet still captivating drive that allowed us to reflect on the incredible sights and experiences of our Swiss adventure.
